NEWEST COMET IS NO STRANGER TO UTICA
Oct 12, 2017Brendan Woods is no stranger to Utica, New York. His mother is from the area and still has relatives that live here. He also has ties to hockey in Utica as well as the Comets. Woods’ father, Bob, was roommates with Comets Director of Hockey Operations Pat Conacher during their time with the Utica Devils, where they both played in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Conacher was a captain for the Devils while Woods was there, and spoke highly of his character.
“His father was a heart and soul player, the way he came in every day he was one of those guys you loved to play with,” Comets Director of Hockey Operations Pat Conacher stated. “It does not surprise me at all that Brendan is the same. He wants to be a hockey player and is very respectful.”
When asked about his 48-hour experience in Utica thus far, Brendan Woods was humble and visibly excited.
“My phone was blowing up yesterday,” Brendan Woods explained. “But it’s cool; it’s an interesting experience. Last night we were just talking about how I’m usually here for the holidays and vacation, but I’m here to do a job now and I’m excited and glad the Utica Comets are giving me an opportunity. I’m looking forward to playing for them.”
Woods comes in on a professional tryout contract after appearing in 24 games with the Charlotte Checkers, where he registered three goals and three assists last season. Woods won’t have to look far to start building chemistry with his new teammates, as he and Joseph LaBate played together at the University of Wisconsin. “We were really close buddies in Wisconsin back in the day when we played together,” Woods said. “Today was only my second practice but the guys have welcomed me with open arms.”
Woods is also looking forward to experiencing home games and playing in front of the raucous crowds at the Adirondack Bank Center. “All I’ve heard is good things about the fans and the crowd. It’s kind of like the NHL the way you get treated here and seeing the facilities just today, it shows how nice it is.”
Despite being away from the area most of the time, Woods hasn’t forgotten about his favorite places to eat. “I know my Franco’s pizza, it’s my favorite. Every time me and my family come to visit we make sure my aunts have Franco’s pizza and wings ready for us. My cousin’s husband also owns Little Roma Pizza and Catering. There’s a couple other places I’ve been to as well.”
