FOUR-GOAL FIRST PERIOD DOOMS COMETS IN LOSS TO DEVILS
Nov 10, 2018Binghamton, N.Y. – The Comets surrendered four goals in the opening frame as they fell 5-1 to the Binghamton Devils Saturday night at the Floyd L. Maines Veteran’s Memorial Arena. Lukas Jasek scored the lone goal for the Comets. Ivan Kulbakov took the loss in net, stopping 8 of 11 shots before being replaced by Connor LaCouvee.
Nick Lappin put Binghamton up 1-0 just 1:17 into the game. Marian Studenic made it 2-0 five minutes later. Curtis Gabriel continued the push a minute and a half later, tipping a shot past Kulbakov. LaCouvee replaced Kulbakov in net after the goal. The onslaught continued as John Ramage’s shot leaked through LaCouvee a minute later. Jasek got the Comets on the board with three minutes remaining in the first, pushing a rebound past Devils goalie Mackenzie Blackwood. Tanner MacMaster and Michael Carcone tallied the assists.
Ryan Schmelzer capitalized on a turnover to put Binghamton back up by four at the 4:11 mark of the second period. The Comets were unable to find the net in the middle frame despite outshooting Binghamton 12-4.
The Comets fought hard in the third to attempt a comeback but were shutdown by Blackwood and the Devils’ defense.
The Comets return to the ice Wednesday night as they faceoff against the Belleville Senators. Puck drop at CAA Arena is a 7 p.m. The game can be heard on 94.9 KROCK and viewed on AHL TV.
