COMETS WIN FIFTH STRAIGHT GAME
Mar 5, 2017Utica, NY – The Utica Comets won on Sunday afternoon against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers by a score of 2-1 to complete a weekend sweep at the Utica Memorial Auditoruim.
Carter Bancks began the scoring with his eighth of the year 11:41 into the game. The forward scored on a wrist shot that hit the post and went into the back of the net. Assists came from Joseph LaBate and Wacey Hamilton. Sound Tigers goaltender Jaroslav Halak stopped 11 of the Comets’ shots in the period, this included two power play opportunities.
At 9:34 of the second period, Ryan Pulock fired a slap shot past Thatcher Demko for his 12th goal of the season. The goal was scored directly after a faceoff win with assists from Devon Toews and Joshua Winquist. With 41 seconds left in the second stanza, LaBate ripped a wrist shot past Halak for his fourth of the year. Cole Cassels and Colby Robak assisted on the goal to return the Comets to a one-goal lead through 40 minutes of hockey.
The Comets locked down defensively and protected the lead in the third period. Despite the Sound Tigers pulling Halak for the extra attacker, the score remained and the Comets won 2-1.
Demko won his fifth straight game and third game in as many days. The rookie improved his record to 14-11-4 with 24 saves. Halak made 26 saves but his record dropped to 14-3-3.
The Comets did not score on three power play opportunities while the team killed all three penalties.
