COMETS KISS HERSHEY GOODBYE IN OVERTIME

Mar 1, 2019

Utica, N.Y. – The Utica Comets twice rallied from one-goal deficits to top the Hershey Bears 3-2 in overtime Friday night at the Adirondack Bank Center. Zack MacEwen, Reid Boucher, and Cam Darcy scored for Utica. Boucher’s goal broke the Comets’ single season record for goals in a season. Michael Leighton made 21 saves in the win.

A fast moving first period yielded a combined 16 shots but no goals from either team thanks to the work of Leighton and Bears netminder Vitek Vanecek.

Liam O’Brien got Hershey on the board first five minutes into the second period, beating Leighton with a one-timer from the slot. MacEwen tied the game with a power play goal at the 15:17 mark of the middle frame, redirecting a pass from Reid Boucher. Tom Pyatt also assisted on the goal. Mike Sgarbossa tied the game with a power play goal of his own two minutes later.

Boucher tied the game five minutes into the third, beating Vanecek from an impossible angle. Cam Darcy and Jaime Sifers tallied the assists. Neither team could find the net in the final 15 minutes and the game would head to overtime.

Darcy beat Vanecek with a backhander in tight 44 seconds into overtime to give the Comets the win.

The Comets are back at it tomorrow night against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Puck drop at the PPL Center is at 7:05 p.m. The game can be heard on 94.9 KROCK and viewed on AHL TV.
