COMETS HONOR VETERANS IN MATCHUP WITH SYRACUSE
Nov 11, 2021Still Perfect: The Comets entered the weekend of three games in three nights without being defeated, and that’s exactly how they’d finish when they beat the Laval Rocket 4-2 and now hold a seven-game winning streak to start the season.
The scoring started in the the second period as the Comets got off to a solid start with winger Fabian Zetterlund sliding the puck in front of the net for Tyce Thompson who slid it past Laval goalie Michael McNiven at 1:33 into the period. Comets later capitalized on an odd man rush that resulted in a Joe Gambardella goal with 6:08 into the period. It was Gambardella’s fourth goal in two games.
In the last period of regulation, Laval got on the board but the Comets’ Graeme Clarke managed to put one in with 12:54 into the period extending the Comets lead to 3-1. Quickly after, Rockets were able to close in on the Comets at 15:11 in front of the crease on a Jesse Ylönen goal bring the game to a 3-2 score but Utica managed an empty net tally to seal the victory at 18:52 when Jesper Boqvist scored his second of the season. The Comets skated away with the victory and a winning streak intact.
Veteran’s Day Game: The Utica Comets will hold their annual Military Appreciation game to honor our local Veterans and the sacrifices they have made and continue to make to protect our Country. The matinée game, which takes place on Veterans Day, will welcome many Veterans, Purple Heart Recipients, and Gold Star families to the Adirondack Bank Center to watch the Comets face off against the Syracuse Crunch. The theme for this year’s game is ‘ Honor and Remember,’ with the Comets focusing on honoring and remembering the sacrifice of our military’s fallen heroes and their families.
The celebration kicks off at 12:30pm on the Veterans Plaza of the Adirondack Bank Center with an annual ceremony. The ceremony will include a wreath laying, as well as the unveiling of several Veteran-related additions to the plaza that will be built upon in the coming years.
The Comets will then take the ice in their first theme jersey of the 2021-22 season. A new take on the Comets brand, the jersey will feature a camo print and a modified red and black crest. Additionally, each player will wear a unique military patch on their shoulders, representing a certain branch or unit that may have special meaning to them.
The Crunch: Coming off a loss last night against the Bridgeport Islanders, the Syracuse Crunch battle the Comets for the third time this season and the first inside the Adirondack Bank Center. The Comets were victorious twice previously in Syracuse on October 23rd and November 5th. The Comets used both Akira Schmid and Nico Daws in net for those games respectively with winning scores of 5-2 and 6-3. These two teams face each other 12 times during the regular season.
