COMETS COMPLETE COMEBACK TO DEFEAT SOUND TIGERS
Jan 14, 2017Bridgeport, CT - The Utica Comets scored three third period goals to defeat the Bridgeport Sound Tigers by a 3-1 score on Saturday night at the Webster Bank Arena.
The teams skated to a scoreless first period that setup a goaltender battle between Richard Bachman and Jaroslav Halak. The Comets had one power play that was killed by the Sound Tigers. Bridgeport outshot the Comets 11-10 in the frame.
Wacey Hamilton was whistled for a holding call at 7:06 of the second period. Ryan Pulock opened the scoring with a slap shot on the power play for his fourth of the year, all scored in consecutive home games. The goal, tallied at 7:33 was assisted by Devon Toews and Joshua Winquist. The teams were held scoreless the rest of the period with the Comets having 1:34 of power play time carry over to the third stanza.
Darren Archibald evened the game at one with a one-timer goal in front of the net. Alexandre Grenier worked the puck into the offensive zone to find Archibald for his 11th of the year. Curtis Valk was credited with the secondary assist. The Comets took the lead on a play that began with a shot block from Colby Robak. Valk entered the zone by feeding Archibald in front of the net who was tied up. He left the puck for Grenier to send into the back of the net for his 13th of the year at 17:34. Evan McEneny potted an empty netter to seal the game. Cole Cassels assisted on the goal by winning the faceoff in his own zone.
Bachman made 32 saves to improve his record to 6-7-1 on the season. Halak stopped 26 shots in the loss to fall to 1-1-2.
The Comets were scoreless on three power play chances and surrendered a goal on the lone penalty.
The Comets return to the ice on Tuesday night in St. John’s, Newfoundland against the IceCaps. Faceoff is slated for 6:00 p.m. from the Mile One Centre. The game can be heard live on 94.9 KROCK and viewed on AHL Live.
