DEMKO'S SHUTOUT LEADS COMETS TO FIRST WIN OF SEASON
Oct 13, 2017Rochester, NY – The Utica Comets defeated the Rochester Americans by a score of 2-0 on Friday night at the Blue Cross Arena.
Nikolay Goldobin struck 46 seconds into the game, capitalizing on a turnover behind the Americans net. Reid Boucher picked up the assist to give the Comets a 1-0 lead that carried into the second period.
Patrick Wiercioch extended the Comets’ lead seven minutes into the second period. The defenseman roofed a wrist shot over the glove of Linus Ullmark. Boucher and Carter Bancks tallied the assists on Wiercioch’s first AHL goal since his last AHL game on January 11, 2013. Thatcher Demko stopped 19 shots over the course of the second period to keep the Americans off the scoreboard.
The third period showcased a strong defense from the two teams with only 13 total shots. The Comets withstood Rochester’s comeback attempt to secure the 2-0 win.
Demko finished with 33 saves to earn his third career shutout. Linus Ullmark stopped 28 of 30 shots in the loss. The power play went 0-6, while the penalty kill was a perfect 4-4.
The Comets are back in action tomorrow night against the Syracuse Crunch in game one of the Galaxy Cup series. Puck drops at 7 p.m. at the Onondaga County War Memorial. The game can be heard on 94.9 KROCK and viewed on AHL Live.
